Shelter is a basic human need that plays a large role in the health and safety of our community. The need for shelter becomes even more apparent as the winter arrives to Kingston. The JCI Shelter Challenge is a way to raise money and awareness about this important need locally and in disaster areas.
The Shelter Fundraiser is a 48 hour campout in downtown Kingston from 7am January 9th until 7am January 11th, 2009. The goals are simple; to raise awareness in the Kingston community about the importance of shelter, and to raise money to support two very important organizations. Locally we will be supporting Kingston Interval House. This organization offers safe, temporary, shelter for women alone or with their children. Kingston Interval House is currently looking to fundraise for some important renovations, and we intend to furnish a unit at Interval House’s second stage housing to provide a safe haven for local families who are victims of domestic violence. Internationally, The Shelter Fundraiser will be aiming to purchase and provide 3-4 “Shelter Boxes” for disaster relief for Shelterbox Canada, a Rotary Club Initiative. In times of disaster, many thousands of people are often left homeless and without basic shelter and survival equipment. Shelterbox Canada stands at the ready to provide aid to those in need anywhere in the world. The 16 campers will only be using the World Health Organization food ration portions and any restuarant donations they receive on site.
If you would like to donate to JCI Kingston for this project you can either meet us down at Confederation Basin during the challenge or you can mail your cheque payable to JCI Kingston to:

The event raised over $7,000 and will help furnish a suite at Kingston Interval House and purchase over 2 Shelter Box Kits from Shelter Box Canada. A big thank you goes out to the City of Kingston for partnering with us on this project and providing so much support. The Brain from Chum Radio 98.9 was absolutely amazing with the radio coverage and even camping out with us too! Throughout the event we also received food donations and support from the following:
